Good Evening Christlike Ministries NWA Family,

I was all set to call it a day, but how many of you know that the Lord can change our plans in seconds, Amen!?!  As I was looking through the few sites I check to for their verse of the day I came across this one, and here I am working on another message to write for Pastor B’s Blog.  These messages are really fun to write, and I couldn’t think of a better way to bring the 4th Anniversary of Christlike Ministries NWA to a close then doing what I’ve been doing for the last four years.

So, as you can tell by the title and the scriptures we’re going to be talking about when the disciples asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was, and the answer He gave was in two parts…but I wouldn’t be penning a message if that’s all the Lord had to say about what the greatest commandment is.  So, here’s the scripture, and then we’ll take a moment to get into what the Lord wants to talk to us about, Amen!?!

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 22:36-40 (NKJV)

The greatest of the commandments can be summed up with just one four letter word.  That word, of course, is Love.  It’s also the way the Lord said that the world would be able to identify His true disciples.  It’s the greatest commandment.  It’s the greatest of all the spiritual fruits.  Between faith, hope, and love…the greatest is still love.  It’s greater than all the volunteering we may do because if it’s not done in love Paul says by inspiration of the Holy Ghost it’s good for nothing.  It’s also the one thing that we can all know and understand about Who and What God is because the Bible says that God IS Love.

Love is the thing that ALL the law hangs on, and if you think about it Jesus is right.  If you love God and you love others then the rest of the commandments really aren’t that difficult to keep.  If you love others like you love yourself then you won’t lie to them, you won’t steal from them, and to go even deeper if you love others you won’t want or covet their stuff.  If you love God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength then it won’t be hard to keep Him as our only God because if we love Him with every fiber of our being we won’t have room or reason to search for another god to love.

Love God and Love your neighbor.  Those are the two greatest commandments.  Think about it, friends.  Out of all the things that Jesus could’ve said was the greatest commandment.  Think of not just the ten commandments God gave Moses, but there were 600 plus other laws that Jesus could’ve said.  Out of everything Jesus could’ve chosen He sums up all the law in two commandments that wind up centered upon one word: Love.

The greatest commandment, the greatest fruit, the greatest characteristic of a disciple, and the one thing God wants us to know about Him above all.  God Himself put a premium on love by being Love.  God put a premium on love by making it the greatest way the world can tell His people apart from the rest of the world.  God put a premium on love by stating that loving Him and loving others and loving ourselves as being the greatest commandments.

While the rest of us put a premium on holy and right living and other things.  Jesus put the premium on love.  It doesn’t take much to understand why.  I’ve written many times about how God is Love, and that’s why the premium is placed on love.  It’s because the greatest way we can separate ourselves from the rest of the world, and show ourselves as children of God is by becoming the very thing our Father is…Love.

This doesn’t mean that we stop seeking to live like God is our Father.  This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t strive to have cleaner tongues.  This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t strive to have works that are consistent with someone who is a child of God.  What it does mean is the greatest way we can obey God is by loving Him above everything else…and loving others with the same passion in which we love ourselves.

Have a blessed day in the Lord!

Pastor B
